High school athletes across the State are gearing up for competition, and the Perry Community School District are preparing to make it as safe as possible.

Activities Director Scott Pierce tells Raccoon Valley Radio he’s been hard at work the last few weeks in preparation for having a safe fall sports season. Perry was able to navigate baseball and softball season without a positive COVID-19 case, which was the case for around 95% of schools.

Pierce adds he’s excited to give the student-athletes an opportunity to compete, “When I look at the outside perspective, or how we’re doing as a team, I think we are as smooth as we can be. Everybody’s on the same page, everybody understands everybody’s position, and working together. And as far as creating a positive life for our kids to come in and still get a great experience, I think we’re doing everything we can to make that happen. I am excited for Perry kids to start almost getting onto normalcy as much as we can, get these kids out doing things, getting their minds off of what they’re getting used to these days is nice.”

Despite the unusual circumstances, Pierce says he’s been impressed with participation numbers. The Perry athletic season begins tonight as they’re hosting North Polk for a volleyball match.
