Two grain storage bins completely destroyed at Heartland Cooperative in Rippey

In the aftermath of the derecho storm, careful analysis of any damaged grain bin should be kept in mind.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends looking for damage that is confined to the roof, sidewall sheets or wall stiffeners of the bin. Grain bin owners should also look for any damage to the foundation or anchor components. Any significant damage to the foundation could mean a complete reconstruction of the bin and the foundation. If only the bin itself needs to be replaced, Extension advises to make sure the new bin is compatible with the existing foundation.

Additionally, any grain handling equipment like bucket elevators, downspouts, cross conveyors or support structure for grain bins should be inspected for damage as well.

When making financial decisions for replacements, ISU Extension suggests to consider the overall grain system design and suitable needs for the future. Grain bin owners and operators should consult with a grain expert for the best possible design.
