The Greene County High School cross-country girls and boys are wrapping up their second week of practice. The Rams were to have opened the season on Aug. 24 for the Woodward-Granger meet on the Jester Park Golf Course. That meet has been cancelled due to damage on the course from the storm of Aug. 10.

Raccoon Valley Radio visited with senior Makala Kafer and she told of her goals for the season. “As a senior, my goals are to definitely get a PR (Personal Record) compared to what I’ve gotten in the past few years, and to complete a full season because we’re low on numbers.” She was asked if the 3.1 miles distance (5 kilometers) was daunting when she first took up the sport. “It was awful at first! Especially since I’m a track sprinter, but it definitely is a good thing to help you stay in shape and work for other sports.”

Sophomore Olivia Shannon, like Kafer, is a track & field sprinter who runs cross-country. She talked about having a year under her belt with the longer distance. “Last year, I was just getting used to running a longer distance. This year I’m trying to improve my time more.”

The Rams are set to open the 2020 campaign on Sept. 3 at the West Central Valley Coed meet.
