Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig originally scheduled a visit to a Churdan farm last week to talk about drought stress on crops.
Churdan farmer Ryan Kock was the host and tells Raccoon Valley Radio that trip quickly took a different direction following last Monday’s derecho storm. He describes what Naig shared.
“His (Naig’s) major concern of just the stress that this is going to put on (including) financially, how are we going to recover from this (to) grain storage. There’s just a lot that comes along with something like this.”
Kock says the entire agricultural industry was impacted by last week’s storm.
“A lot of farmers got affected, especially as widespread as that was. A lot of farmers probably all of their acres got affected in some way. I think the reason he (Naig) showed up is we had a lot of different viewpoints there (and) crop insurance standpoint. I was kind of going through the different programs that are out there and the financial impact that this is going to have on our trade territory here.”
Naig’s visit was accompanied by ISU Extension field agronomists, State Climatologist Justin Glisan and Farm Bureau Insurance representatives.
