To say that Spring Lake Park near Grand Junction is having a successful year would be an understatement, according to the Greene County Conservation Department.
Conservation Director Dan Towers says this year is shaping up to be one of the best.
“We’re seeing crowds on weekends like we would only normally see on a holiday weekend. There’s 120 campsites at Spring Lake and there’s well over 100 camping units there each weekend now. So at the end of the fiscal year – at the end of June – we were already even with where we’ve been in past years, and that was missing two weeks of camping in April and May. So if it continues like this, it’ll be a record revenue setter for camping revenue in the County.”
Towers attributes most of the increase to COVID-19 with more people enjoying outdoor activities, along with river boating and using the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Towers adds that he’s excited because more camping revenue could mean more parks improvement projects that his office can do in the future.
