The camps are over and official practices for all Greene County High School Fall sports begin today. Greene County has its own football, volleyball, and cross-country programs. Girls wanting to swim do so at Boone High School under an athletic sharing agreement.
Jeff Lamoureux is the girls and boys cross-country head coach. Chris Heisterkamp is the head volleyball coach, and Caden Duncan is the head coach of the football program.
Cross-country is the first of the Greene County sports to have competition that counts on the record. The Rams run in the Woodward-Granger meet on the Jester Park Golf Course on Monday, Aug. 24.
Volleyball opens its schedule on Tuesday, Aug. 25 in Glidden vs. a pair of non-conference opponents in Collins-Maxwell and Glidden-Ralston. Volleyball also plays on Aug. 27 in Ft. Dodge at St. Edmond High School. New to the schedule is the Rams hosting their own tournament on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the new high school gym. Other teams include Boone, Carroll, Des Moines Hoover, Grinnell, Pella Christian, South Hardin (Eldora) and Stanton.
The football season opener is on Friday, Aug. 28 at Dewey Field in Perry as the Blue Jays and Rams renew the “Cowbell” rivalry. The varsity football action on the 28th will be broadcast on KG98, KDLS 1310 AM and 99.7 FM, as well as being streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
