Low-income families in Guthrie County in need of assistance receiving school supplies this fall can sign up for a program through the New Opportunities Guthrie County Family Development Center.
The deadline to sign up online is by the end of today, or else people can contact Coordinator Rhonda Huggins to sign up over the phone. Huggins explains that the program provides free school supplies for preschool through eighth grade students, “So it’s open to low-income families in Guthrie County and if they’re not already a client we would need to ask some questions of them, for instance what their income was and fill out an application besides the one that they do online. So we just have to verify income and make sure that they do qualify for those school supplies from us.”
The program is sustained entirely from the public’s donations which they are accepting until August 12th at Ben’s Five and Dime in Panora, Dollar General and Hometown Foods in Guthrie Center, or at the New Opportunities office at Guthrie Center City Hall. Huggins mentions they are especially in need of multicolored pocket folders and glue sticks. You can hear more from Huggins during today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
