There are a few different ways for those individuals needing to renew their driver’s license or pay vehicle registrations.

Greene County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen says July 27th is the deadline for those needing to pay their vehicle registration or renew their driver’s license from February-May. She notes that you can either come to her office in the Greene County Courthouse in Jefferson or online through the Iowa Department of Transportation. Mechaelsen points out that to renew a driver’s license online, you must be between 18-70 years-old and have no unique restrictions, including a commercial driver’s license. She adds, individuals can also apply for a six-month extension through the DOT’s website.

“The six month extension is for anybody with a valid driver’s license. What that does is it just gives you six months from your current expiration date just to give you some time to come in when you guys feel comfortable coming into our office. It’ll help both you and us out (and) giving you the opportunity to come in at your leisure and giving us some time to get these people who are way expired renewed first.”

Mechaelsen says they are not doing driving tests at this time, due to COVID-19 concerns, but they are doing the computer and written tests for driver’s license. You must also schedule an appointment for driver’s license, but can walk-in to pay vehicle registrations.
