A semi truck struck an overhead fiber optic line, causing damage to the line and a nearby vehicle in Bayard Monday.

According to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Christopher Michael Kammerich of Pilot Grove, Missouri was driving the semi hauling an oversized load with a height of 14’6” at about 1:48 p.m. Kammerich was traveling west on Railway Street from Main Street when the truck snagged a low hanging line owned by Windstream Communications, causing it to snap and strike a parked vehicle which caused heavy damage to the roof and tailgate. Witnesses stated that the fiber optic line was hanging dangerously low. Kammerich informed law enforcement that he traveled on this road a few weeks ago with the same vehicle height and didn’t have an issue. Damage was estimated at $8,500 to the parked vehicle, $5,000 to the line, and an undisclosed amount of damage was also reported to railroad equipment on the semi trailer. No citations have been issued.
