The COVID-19 abbreviated high school softball season ended on Friday night for the Greene County Rams. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team finished with a 5-11 record after falling in Humboldt to the fourth ranked Wildcats 10-0 in five innings by the 10-run rule in a Class 3A Region 2 semifinal. Humboldt is 19-2 and advances to Monday’s night’s regional final vs. MOC-Floyd Valley. That winner will play in the State tournament.
Freshman Emma Hoyle had the lone Greene County hit, a second inning lead off double to deep center that one-hopped the fence. That was the only base runner for the Rams in the shortened contest.
Humboldt senior Ellie Jacobson faced 16 batters, just one over the minimum for five innings. She entered the game averaging 1-2/3 strikeouts per inning, but fanned just two batters on the night, walked no one, and the Wildcats had no errors.
Hoyle took the pitching loss, but equaled her career high in strikeouts with six. She gave up eight hits, two of those on the infield. The freshman walked two batters, one intentional, and she hit one with a pitch. Seven Greene County errors did not help the Rams.
Seniors Kylie Beyers, Izzy Bravard, and Tieryn Tucker, all played their final game for the Rams.
