The Adair County Fair has gradually started its 4-H and FFA shows, with the sole show tomorrow being the bucket and bottle calf show at 9 a.m. at the MidAmerican Energy Arena.

The Fair Board and Extension staff have cut back on the fair’s programming this year due to COVID-19, with the goal of having the fair be a safe and successful experience for the youth involved. Summerset Citizens 4-H Club Secretary and Nodaway Valley FFA Chapter Vice President Jennifer Holliday has been showing animals at the fair for eight years, and she says there are many lessons when it comes to being involved in 4-H and FFA, such as independence, “When you take care of animals you have to rely on yourself to make sure that they are fed and watered and properly taken care of everyday. So with independence also comes responsibility, and with my chickens especially, I have gained a lot of communication skills as I have to discuss with my customers what they want and what they look for in a chicken and discuss price deals. And so with that I’ve also learned a lot about finance management which are all things that I will definitely need in my future.”

The Adair County Fair officially begins Thursday and lasts through Sunday, with grandstand entertainment scheduled Friday through Sunday. Listen to 107.9 FM, KKRF as we broadcast live throughout the fair from the Big Red Radio. You can also listen to the second half of a two-part Let’s Talk Guthrie County program with Holliday on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
