Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, income filing tax day was pushed back from April 15th to later this month.

Certified Public Accountant Tom Kennedy with Henkel and Associates in Jefferson reminds everyone that the federal income tax filing day is July 15th, and the Iowa filing deadline is July 31st. He notes that for those who haven’t filed their 2019 income taxes yet, remember to file their W2, 1099 and any other form that shows revenues or deductions.

Kennedy points out that for those that received a federal stimulus payment during the COVID-19 pandemic, you don’t have to claim that on your income taxes. He clarifies another detail about the stimulus payment.

“The only thing is next year when they file their return, if they didn’t get the full stimulus (payment) and they qualify, they can still get more money. Some people were limited when it went on your 2018 or 2019, whatever you had filed when those stimulus checks came out. So you still could get some more money. But if they overpaid you, it’s our understanding that you don’t have to pay anything back.”

Kennedy adds, individuals can apply for a six month extension to file their income taxes by October 15th. The application must be filed by July 15th for the extension.
