A Bayard man was recently sentenced to prison for a drug-related charge.

According to Guthrie County Attorney Brenna Bird, 24-year-old Brandon Richard Potter pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance – third offense, a class D felony; and operating while under the influence – first offense, a serious misdemeanor. Judge Thomas P. Murphy sentenced Potter to five years in prison. Potter must also pay over $3,000 in fines, surcharges, and fees. Potter was also found to have violated the terms of his probation on three other Guthrie County cases for which his probation was revoked and the original sentences were imposed to run concurrently.

The charges stem from an April 30th incident when Potter possessed methamphetamine and operated a motor vehicle while a controlled substance was present in his urine. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation assisted in the case.
