Gilbert completed a two-game season series sweep of the Greene County baseball team on Friday night at Allensworth Field in Jefferson. The Class 3A tenth ranked Tigers won 9-2 to improve to 14-1 on the season and 10-1 to lead the league while the Rams fell to 1-8 overall and in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play.
The Rams broke a seven game losing streak to start the season just 24 hours earlier with a 13-2 six-inning victory at Jewell over South Hamilton by the 10-run rule. Playing Gilbert was the fourth game this week for the Rams and their top three pitchers had already been used extensively, and the Tigers took advantage, scoring four runs in the first inning off sophomore Kole Teeples, making his first varsity pitching start. Senior Nick Breon followed, and sophomore Joe Carey finished up on the mound for the Rams. The Tigers led 6-0 after 1-1/2 innings before the Rams scored twice in the bottom of inning number two. The Tigers added one run in the third and two in the seventh. Gilbert and North Polk (Alleman) will leave the HOIAC at the end of this season and join the Raccoon River Activities Conference, so Friday’s game was the last scheduled between the Rams and Gilbert.
Greene County’s offense was out hit nine to seven and the Rams were charged with three errors to just one for the Tigers. Senior Brent Riley singled in the second inning and scored on a base hit by junior Peyton Kinsey, who later scored on a single by senior Tyler Teeples. Breon, freshman Brayden Roberts, sophomore Max Riley, and Carey also had base hits.
The Rams host North Polk (Alleman) on Monday in a varsity doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. due to a rain out on June 22. Game two of the twin bill will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
