Today is Independence Day, which for residents in Perry means they are permitted to use consumer fireworks within city limits.
However, Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds reminds the public there are strict rules in place. That starts with the timeframe, which is only today from 9 a.m. – 11 p.m. Fireworks are to be discharged in the rear of a person’s property or of property they have permission to be on, and must be lit at least 30 feet from any neighboring structure. They cannot be used in any public place, including parks, cemeteries, streets, parking lots, or alleys. Additionally, anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol is not permitted to discharge fireworks.
Finally, Hinds advises residents that fireworks can’t be used within 200 yards of Dallas County Hospital or any senior care facility in the city. “I know that kind of cramps the style of some of the people that live near the hospital, or along Willis or Iowa Street or some of the other areas where you have a nursing home in the vicinity, but too bad! I’m sorry, that’s the just the way it is, that is the law. And that’s because the noise from them will disturb and can cause problems with patients and residents in these facilities.”
Hinds adds, the penalty for violating the City’s fireworks ordinance is a minimum $250 fine and could also result in arrest.
