As you’re likely already aware, the 2020 Adel Sweet Corn Festival has been cancelled due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, though the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce is still keeping one aspect of the celebration alive.
Chamber Director Deb Bengtson says they will still host the annual Sweet Corn 5K Fun Run, though the structure of it will be very different. This year they will do a virtual run, meaning participants will run a 5K of their own and keep track of it electronically. Bengtson says holding the activity in this way will not only allow runners to take part while properly social distancing, but she’s also hopeful it will increase participation. “As people are registering for the virtual 5K run, they will be receiving their t-shirt, we mail them out to them. We ask them to load an app and run a 5K of their choice, and then submit their time and verification that they ran. And at the end, we will be mailing medals out to our best runners for the Sweet Corn 5K! This way it gives people all over the United States the ability to be a part of our 5K run and get a t-shirt, and not have to make plans to get to Adel, Iowa on August 8th.”
Participants can do their run anytime between August 1-10. They are asked to wear their t-shirt while doing so, and Bengtson encourages them to share pictures on the Chamber’s social media.
