The AC/GC baseball had a tall task Thursday night when the top-ranked team in Class 1A came to Guthrie Center.
Martensdale-St Marys came into the double header with a 15-0 record. They came in hot outscoring their previous three opponents by a combined 39-4. It looked like it was going to be another quick win when the Blue Devils plated four in the first inning off eighth grade pitcher Andrew Mahaffey. However, the Chargers had no intention on rolling over and letting that happen. Mahaffey calmed things down on the mound and the AC/GC bats got going in the second inning. Cayden Jensen led off the second frame with a single, followed by another well hit base hit by Eli Kading. Jensen came around to score on a Bryce Littler RBI single. Kading and Litter crossed the play on a Martensdale-St Marys error cutting the deficit to just a single run 4-3. After a couple Charger errors, the Blue Devils got one run back in the third then started to run away in the later innings. Martensdale-St Marys added two more runs in the 5th and 6th innings then one final insurance run in the 7th. AC/GC would fall 10-4.
The second half of the double header would not go as well as the first did as the Blue Devils blew the game open early and went on to win 23-2 in four innings. AC/GC drops to 4-11 on the season and will try to pick up their fifth win Monday when they make the trip to Perry for another inter-class matchup.
