As we celebrate the Independence Day holiday this week, that typically includes lighting fireworks.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams has some safety reminders for those who are allowed to shoot off fireworks. He says to choose a safe area to light fireworks, especially since there’s been fairly dry weather recently.

“There’s a lot of dry areas (which means) stuff is going to catch on fire super easy right now unless we get a bunch of rain. So just be mindful of what’s around you and where the ashes and debris from the fireworks are falling that they may catch switchgrass on fire, roots on fire more easily. Especially after a hot day – a 90 degree day – the shingles (on buildings) are already pretty pliable and (can) very easily start on fire.”

Williams recommends having a water source nearby to put out any potential fires that may start from shooting off fireworks. He notes that for a donation, the Jefferson Fire Department can provide fire crews and a truck to be on hand for a fireworks display to ensure the safety of those in the area.
