big-boom-bracket-battle-finals-1

After two weeks of votes cast as donations to the annual Perry fireworks drive, the finals have been set for the inaugural “Big Boom Bracket Battle” with the Perry Chamber of Commerce.

The showdown for a pie in the face in the name of Fourth of July fireworks will be between prominent Perry residents J.P. Hulgan, owner of Hulgan Plumbing and Heating, and Eddie Diaz, Director of the Perry DMACC Center. Hulgan and Diaz are all that remain of what started as 22 locals nominated for the competition, which was reduced to eight after social media voting in February. COVID-19 delayed the start of the tournament to June, and last week eight became four, which has now become two. Chamber Director Lynsi Pasutti says the bracketed tournament was inspired by the college basketball championships format, and all proceeds will go towards the Fourth of July fireworks display. “So it’s been really fun to have kind of some new energy around the fireworks drive, and have a little fun with it that will ultimately result in someone getting a pie in the face! (It’s) all in good fun, all in friendly competition, (and) for the fireworks drive.”

Voting will run this week and wrap up Friday at noon, at which point the person who raised the most money in their name will be crowned the victor and will receive the aforementioned pie to the face. Donations can be made online, and you can access the voting site by clicking the link below.
