As the 4th of July holiday approaches, temporary fireworks stands are popping up in communities across Iowa, including Jefferson.
Police Chief Mark Clouse says the City ordinance allows for the sale of fireworks, but it is illegal to use them within city limits. He describes how residents can legally use fireworks in town.
“Available to you though is a fireworks permit. So if you’re wanting to have a firework display or some type of celebration, you can apply for that permit. It goes in front of the City Council and they approve or disapprove the permit. Then it’s provided to my office and we know who is permitted and who is not.”
Clouse notes sparklers and snakes are allowed without a permit in city limits. Clouse adds, if you are found using fireworks, you can face a citation and a fine.
