Greene County left Gilbert last night with a pair of Heart of Iowa Activities Conference losses in different fashions. The softball Rams led 3-0 before losing 4-3. Gilbert tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning, then took the lead on an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. The baseball Rams went 4-2/3 innings with the Tigers before falling 11-1 by the 10-run rule.

The softball game saw Greene County score twice in the second and once in the fourth. Gilbert had a three run fifth to tie the game and the second and third runs in the frame came on a two-run homer to straight away center over an eight foot high fence by sophomore Bella Nelson, who in four games is 10 for 15 with two homers, five doubles, eight runs scored and eight batted in. Two Greene County throwing errors allowed the go ahead run to score in the sixth.

Freshman Emma Hoyle took the pitching loss. She allowed three earned runs on four hits and five walks, while striking out four.

Greene County had eight hits. Izzy Bravard had two hits and two runs batted in with sophomore Carmyn Paup collecting two base hits. Freshman Olivia Shannon adding a pair of hits. Senior Kyla Beyers had one hit and Hoyle had a base knock. Freshman Alexa Peters drove in a run. Greene County has not had an extra base hit in any of the first three games of the season. The Rams fell to 1-2 overall and in the HOIAC, while the Tigers improved to 2-1 in the league and 3-1 overall.

The baseball game was all Gilbert. The Tigers broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth. They scored twice in the fifth to end the game. The lone Greene County run came in the fourth inning after the second of senior Tyler Teeples’ two infield singles. Senior Caden Lowmiller added a single and Teeples later scored on a wild pitch.

Teeples was the starting and losing pitcher. He went the first three innings and all five runs off him were earned. Junior Cameron Miller was next and five of the six runs he allowed in 1-2/3 innings were earned. The game ended on a Lowmiller wild pitch to the only batter he faced.

The Rams are 0-3 overall and in the HOIAC. Gilbert is 2-0 in the league and 4-0 overall. The Tigers had a three run home run in the third from first baseman Easton Johnson.

The Greene County teams play North Polk on Monday with baseball in Alleman and softball on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com from the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway in Jefferson. Air time is shortly after 7 with game time around 7:30 p.m.
