Coach Tom Kennedy’s Greene County softball Rams are on the road at Gilbert tonight in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. The Rams are coming off a 7-1 loss to South Hamilton (Jewell) on Wednesday in the home opener. They’ll try to go 2-0 on the road this week after opening the season on Monday night in Des Moines vs. Saydel and returning with a 6-5 victory. Greene County is playing just the 14 game HOIAC schedule this season, shortened due to COVID-19 concerns.

Gilbert is 1-1 in the conference after losing to Nevada on Monday by a 10-7 score, then upending Class 3A number 9 North Polk on Wednesday by a 6-2 final, halting a 10-game losing streak to the Comets dating back to 2015. Sandwiched between the conference games is a 12-7 victory over Perry. The Tigers are averaging more than eight runs per game and sophomore Bella Nelson has nine hits in her first 12 at-bats, including a home run and six runs batted in.

Greene County has a total of 10 hits in their first two games and are still looking for their first extra base hit of the season.
