Greene County began the COVID-19 shortened high school baseball season with a 2-1 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference loss on Monday night at Saydel High School in Des Moines. Greene County had six hits to just three for the Eagles, but the Rams had two runners thrown out at third base and committed two errors. Saydel played errorless ball. The game was the head coaching debut of Matt Paulsen for Greene County.
Senior Austin Pyles went six and two-thirds innings to get the win. Sophomore Bryce Stalder took the tough luck loss after throwing the first five innings. He allowed just two hits, both singles, and one earned run. Senior Tyler Teeples threw a scoreless sixth inning for Greene County.
Senior Caden Lowmiller recorded a pair of infield singles in his first varsity game. Senior Nick Breon knocked in the only Greene County Run with a two out single in the third to give the Rams a 1-0 lead, but the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Breon apparently has been bothered by a knee issue and left the game without returning right after his RBI single. He hit .395 a season ago and is among the top shortstops in the HOIAC. Cam Miller, Tyler Teeples, and Brayden Roberts also singled once for the Rams.
Greene County opens the home schedule on Wednesday night at Allensworth Field in Jefferson vs. South Hamilton.
