The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn FFA chapter is being afforded a unique opportunity to get some real world experience in growing crops.
At their most recent meeting, the ADM School Board approved a resolution to commit 22 acres of tillable District land to be worked by FFA students this growing season. Superintendent Greg Dufoe says they had excess land that was purchased along with the plot for the new elementary building in Adel, and when considering putting the acreage to use they landed on FFA as a worthy beneficiary. “McKenzie Gettler, our agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor, has been looking for this kind of opportunity. So it all kind of fell into place very quickly, and the Board was super supportive. So we granted them permission to plant that this year, and any revenue that they see from the harvest would be an FFA fundraiser. So (we’re) really excited about that, as they are.”
Dufoe notes that the field has already been planted, and the students will spend the summer tending to it. The chosen crop for this year was soybeans, and they may rotate between that and corn in subsequent years for as long as the land is used for planting.
