Through all the ups and downs we’ve had to deal with through the last three-plus months, we finally have high school sports back.

AC/GC baseball and softball will kick off their season today with a trip to WCAC foe Woodward Granger. The baseball team will start their season at 6:30 p.m. Last year they went 5-23 and 2-20 in conference play. They fell in both outings against the hawks. The Chargers put a very young team on the field in 2019. Last season, AC/GC had eight players record over 50 at-bats. Of those eight, only three of them were seniors and featured one junior in Bryce Littler. This breaks down to half of their top batters were freshman and sophomores gaining valuable experience with each time out. That goes for their pitching staff as well. Of their 28 games, almost half of their starters were in grade 10 or below.

The softball team will start shortly after with first pitch set for 7 p.m. Their season finished with a record of 14-17 and 7-13 in the WCAC, including two wins against Woodward Granger. They saw some long stretches without wins, but ended the season on the upswing. After a brutal stretch in late June, AC/GC tied their longest losing streak at five games after dropping both games against Ogden and Van Meter before splitting a double heading against Panorama. This team could have packed up their season a few weeks early, but they decided to buckle down. After their close win against the Panthers, AC/GC started to dominate winning their next four games by a combined score of 40-9 including a 9-0 shutout victory against West Central Valley in the first round of regional play. While Chargers then saw their season come to an end against WCAC Champion Van Meter, they’ll be looking to find that momentum they earned in the last few weeks of the season to take advantage of a shortened season.
