Instead of walking loops around a track, Guthrie County residents drove loops around their communities for an event hosted by Relay for Life Saturday evening.

Scoop the Loop for Hope was held in the cities of Adair, Guthrie Center, Panora, and Stuart, as the Relay for Life of Guthrie County Committee posted yard signs honoring or memorializing those who’ve fought cancer with the help of donations from loved ones, which will go towards the American Cancer Society. In Guthrie Center volunteers stationed at Mitchell Park where participants could drive by the posted signs and give additional donations. As the 2020 Relay for Life event scheduled last April was postponed due to COVID-19, Committee Co-Chair Becky Peterson says the event was a way to show continued support for those who are currently fighting or have survived cancer, “We’ve had a great turnout. We couldn’t ask for a better crowd going on, people are still trickling in with the entire event. I’m sure Stuart, Adair, and Panora are getting the same turnout as we here are in Guthrie County. I couldn’t ask for better weather, better community to have it in.”

Over 100 yard signs were ordered from the public, and Peterson credits their support as well as that from Relay for Life’s sponsors, “I think the county recognizes that we raise funds for Relay for Life, for the research, for Hope Lodges. We also give rides to people who need rides to their appointments, and I think the community recognizes how many people just in our community are affected by this disease, and recognize that every little bit helps that fight.”
