After one day of practice, the Greene County High School summer sports head coaches report things went well. A little extra time was spent on sanitizing equipment once practice ended, but softball head coach Tom Kennedy and baseball head coach Matt Paulsen didn’t seem to mind. They get to coach sports they love, which was an uncertainty until May 20 when Governor Reynolds, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, and Iowa High School Athletic Association gave the go-ahead for summer baseball and softball in Iowa.
Kennedy reports 18 girls out from eighth grade through high school seniors. Not a large number, but an increase from 2019 when only 13 girls finished the 8-18 season.
Paulsen told Raccoon Valley Radio he had 23 players at the first practice in grades 9-12, which falls pretty well in line with participation from recent seasons.
Greene County travels to Saydel in Des Moines for the first softball and baseball games of the season. Those will take place on Monday, June 15. The varsity baseball contest will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Five baseball and five softball regular season broadcasts for Greene County summer sports are on the schedule. Both teams have 14 games, all in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference set for June and July.
