As the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District continues to expand at a rapid pace, the School Board has once again placed an embargo on open enrollment in for next year.
Superintendent Greg Dufoe says 2020-21 will be the fourth year in a row that students from nearby districts have been prohibited from enrolling at ADM. He says the reason is because they don’t currently have the facilities to accommodate their growth, at least until the new elementary in Adel is completed next year. “It’s been a hard decision, we don’t prefer to have it be this way. But it’s a strategy that allows us to control to some degree our enrollment growth, and allows us to protect our class sizes especially in advance of our new building. You know we’ll assess with deeper level over the course of next year as to what our approach to open enrollment should be in 2021 when the new building does open. So (it’s) a difficult decision, but one we felt necessary to do in order to manage our growth.”
Even without new open enrollment last year, ADM grew by 118 students in their served enrollment to a total of 2,006. That increase of 7% was one of the highest in Iowa, and the largest for the District since the merger of the three cities.
