The recipients of the 2020 Raccoon Valley Radio Business and Broadcasting scholarships have been named, and one of them is Emma Drake from Woodward-Granger.
Drake is a multisport athlete, involved in choir and speech competition, and has been part of the Woodward-Granger Student Council and National Honor Society for multiple years. However, it was some of her out of school activities that made her the ideal candidate for the Business and Broadcasting scholarship. She started her own small craft business as a freshman in high school, which paved the way for a desire to expand her business acumen through classes. Last year she took part in the Business Experience class, which allowed her to work with some well-known companies in the Des Moines area. Next year, Drake will be attending Hawkeye Community College to study business marketing. After spending two years there to earn an associates degree, she plans to transfer to a university to get a bachelor’s degree.
As a recipient of one of the two Raccoon Valley Radio Business and Broadcasting scholarships, she will take $250 with her to school to help get started. The scholarships are given each year to two graduating seniors at schools throughout the listening area who are going on to a post-secondary school, and are majoring in either a business or broadcasting-related field. They are paid for by area businesses through the Senior Salutes promotion. Raccoon Valley Radio General Manager John McGee says when looking over the applications each year, he pays special attention to how well-rounded students are in their activities, and tries to determine who will best represent their communities, their school, and the station.
