The Iowa Legislature did not return from their COVID-19 recess at the date they wanted, but at least now they have a clear picture for when it will happen.
State Senator Jake Chapman, (R) District 10, says the legislative council initially sought to reconvene the session in a limited capacity on Friday, May 15th. However, after careful thought Chapman says the council elected to push the date back so that the entire Legislature could gather as one, and he’s hopeful that will allow them to get more done. “What was decided was it was probably best for us to continue to work on legislation with our counterparts in the House for the Senate, and vice versa; meeting through electronic means and telephone calls, trying to get all the legislation prepared. I suspect we will not be there for a very long, extended period of time, so we want to make sure over these next couple of weeks we’re working diligently to have all of the legislation drafted (and) ready to go when we return on June 3rd.”
The Legislature has been on recess since mid-March due to social distancing concerns surrounding the coronavirus. Chapman feels the representatives have been productive during the interim, but he’s definitely anxious to get back to work.
