The timeline for the return of the 2020 Iowa legislative session has finally come into focus, as they’ve been on recess for nearly two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
District 10 State Senator Jake Chapman says this past week the legislative council, which he sits on, took action to set the assembly’s return tentatively for May 15th. Chapman says barring a large resurgence of coronavirus prior to that date, legislators will return to the capital to begin work on restarting the session. He says it may be a limited return capacity at first, and that they’ll know more about how that will look as the return draws closer. “I suspect most of the actual work that’s going to be done legislatively will be the first part of June. That’s when I think everything will really pick back up, and we’ll start actually passing legislation. We need a phase-in period of time here in May for us to start getting back engaged on what the topics are going to be that we’re really going to debate (the) first part of June.”
As for the action items to be addressed following the recess, Chapman remains optimistic that they’ll tackle more than just the budget and coronavirus relief.
