With COVID-19 forcing the main event for Greene County Relay for Life to be rescheduled from April 24th to August 7th, organizers are hosting a kick-off event later this week.

Event Leadership Team Chair Tori Riley says a virtual event will be held Friday at 8pm called “Ready, Set, HOPE!” The event will be on the Greene County Relay for Life Facebook page and Riley adds it will take less than one hour. Highlights of the event includes the local cancer survivors, a preview of the main event on August 7th, the 2020 sponsors, information about ordering t-shirts, messages from the event leadership team, updates from the American Cancer Society and progress from team and individual fundraising.

Riley explains why they are holding this kick-off event ahead of their August 7th main event.

“In spite of COVID-19, everything else has stopped except cancer, cancer hasn’t stopped at all. The needs of cancer patients, and their caregivers, and survivors are still there. The need to pay for research in cancer is still there. Relay for Life being the biggest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, they have taken a 90-percent hit to revenues with so many relays being cancelled.”

Riley notes that there’s still time to form a fundraising group or make a monetary donation.
