The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District recently announced their plans for celebrating the Class of 2020, with commencement ceremonies now penciled in for late June.

Superintendent Greg Dufoe says they realized fairly quickly into the COVID-19 mandated school closure that the typical graduation event scheduled for May 24th wasn’t going to fly this year. That said, he emphasizes that they wanted to keep the ceremony as close to the original plan as they could. “You know, no one knows what’s going to be in play in June, so we’re trying to buy some time and execute as traditional a ceremony as possible for our seniors. We really value that (and) we don’t want to have simply a virtual ceremony on May 24th and have that be it. We really want to make all the effort we can to provide those seniors with a graduation ceremony that is traditional.”

The current plans are to hold the ceremony on June 28th at 2:30 p.m. in the ADM Middle School north gym, which is where commencement is typically held. The number of people allowed to attend will be limited, but it will be live-streamed on the internet. If there are still social distancing requirements in place at that time, the event will be rescheduled to July 19th at the same time and place. Dufoe adds, if necessary, they could also move the ceremony to Tiger Stadium to allow for more space, but that’s likely a worst-case scenario.
