The process has begun to repave and stripe 1st Street in Perry, with the contractor Des Moines Asphalt commencing concrete patching and repairs north of Willis Avenue.
Traffic control devices are now in place along Highway 144, which city staff hopes will only result in minor disruptions to the public. Once the repairs are finished, the contractor will get started with a complete asphalt overlay of the road, extending from Highway 141 to where the road narrows to two lanes north of Perry. The start date for that phase of the project and how it will affect local traffic are currently unknown, but Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson emphasizes that the City and contractors will keep the public informed. Peterson also points out that it doesn’t take long for asphalt to be driveable, so the disruptions should be fairly short in nature.
As a reminder, the 1st Street project includes restriping the entire thoroughfare to convert it from four lanes to three, with a turn lane in the middle. It’s being paid entirely by the Iowa Department of Transportation. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call Perry City Hall at 515-465-2481.
