Had 2020 gone as intended, the seniors at Perry High School would currently be readying themselves for their commencement ceremonies. With the COVID-19 pandemic ending the school year prematurely, graduation day has been thrown into limbo.
Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks says the high school administration team led by Principal Dan Marburger has been weighing their options, and they’re taking the wishes of the Class of 2020 into consideration. “Well, I keep saying this, ‘We are going to have graduation, it’s going to be a matter of how and when?’ Mr. Marburger has sent out various surveys, he’s met with senior representation, (and) he’s talked to a number of parents. So we’re still working on that. It appears to us that the students really want to push the graduation date to later, maybe in July, and hopefully have a chance to have people congregate and have a regular graduation.”
Wicks adds, the chances of that happening are unfortunately very slim, so they’re looking into possible alternatives. One option could be to set it up like a drive-in movie with families staying in their cars until the student is called up to cross the stage and receive their diploma. Wicks says that’s just one of several possibilities, and promises to inform the community when a decision is made.
