Jeremy Beherns

The newest Jefferson Police Officer actually worked with the same department years ago.

Officer Jeremy Beherns has 22 years of law enforcement experience, which includes a stint with the Jefferson Police Department. He started his law enforcement career in 1998 with the Odebolt Police Department, then he came to Jefferson and was an officer for six years, achieving the rank of sergeant. Beherns moved onto to the Denison Police Department where he was a sergeant for ten years and then took the assistant police chief position with the Lake View Police Department.

Beherns got out of law enforcement to work in the private sector back in Denison. But after a few months, he says he missed his true passion as a police officer which was interacting with people and helping people in times of need. Beherns describes why he chose the Jefferson Police Department after he made the decision to reenter the profession.

“Well when I decided to get back in (to law enforcement) I was in a position where I didn’t have to do any job, I could be picky to say it the easiest. I always liked Jefferson, I really respect and like Mark Clouse as the chief. So this was really my first choice.”

Over the course of his career, Beherns has mainly worked in smaller town’s police departments. He talks about why he didn’t feel the need to work in a bigger city department.

“So I can know people and be part of the community. I’ve had opportunities to go to bigger departments and when I think about it I really don’t want to. Some of those places you don’t really even know the people you work with, and it just doesn’t appeal to me.”

Beherns adds, he’s excited to be back in Jefferson and looks forward to ending his career with the local police department. Beherns started back with the Jefferson Police Department on April 17th and the Jefferson City Council approved his annual salary of $50,692.
