The City of Perry is beginning the 2020 asphalt overlay project this week, but staff says the work shouldn’t bring much disruption to the public.

City Administrator Sven Peterson says the contractor Des Moines Asphalt will start in the southern areas of the city, beginning with work to prepare the streets for the overlay. In total there will be 60 blocks of city streets receiving a new asphalt surface. Peterson emphasizes that residents will receive ample warning when work is coming to their area, though he points out they might not even realize it’s happening until there’s a new street in front of their house. “As far as street-by-street, a day or two before the crews move into an area, they’ll be notifying households on the block that they may have some disruption. (The) nice thing is that it’s really only about 30-90 minutes that you can’t drive on the asphalt. So (it’s) kind of a nice thing where it’s for the most part a pretty quick in-and-out of getting that work done and then the road is open back up.”

Another overlay project with Des Moines Asphalt will be starting soon in Perry, with the Highway 144/1st Street repaving and restriping project through the Iowa Department of Transportation also on the docket for this summer.
