Several businesses and other organizations are opening on a limited basis starting today, due to the governor’s new public health emergency proclamation.
The relaxed restrictions against COVID-19 have been applied to 77 of Iowa’s 99 counties, including Greene County. One area that was designated by the governor to open are recreation and fitness centers. Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Denny Hammen says the Greene County Community Center is open again for regular hours, but there are certain restrictions and guidelines they must adhere to.
Some of the changes include access to the building. Hammen says anyone 14 and older can access the community center without an adult, but anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult that is from the same household. The weightroom and aerobic exercise area will follow the six-foot social distance recommendation, along with those using the gym. Hammen notes no games or contact sports will be allowed and only one person will be permitted to use the racquetball court. Finally, Hammen says everyone will be responsible for disinfecting equipment that they are using when they are done.
Another restriction from the proclamation is only allowing places like rec and fitness centers to operate at half capacity, which Hammen says won’t be an issue.
“When you look at your six-foot limiting rule, I don’t think we have to worry about capacity because if everyone was to actually maintain their six-foot of distance we wouldn’t come near capacity in the building.”
Hammen reminds everyone they will educate those who come into the facility and hand sanitizer will be available throughout for people to use.
