The annual spring and summer activities through the Perry Public Library will look a little different this year, as a direct result of COVID-19.
Library Director Mary Murphy says the first notable change is that the Dallas County-wide Toddler Fest event has been cancelled. She said the Library Association decided it was not wise to host an event that attracts around a thousand people during the pandemic, even if restrictions are loosened by that time. In that same vein, Murphy says the Perry KidsFest event has been switched around. “Coming up on the KidsFest that was originally scheduled for June 6th, I really felt that this was not an appropriate use of our funding. So we have tentatively scheduled KidsFest for July 25th to be the finale for summer reading rather than the kickoff. Hopefully by that time we will have some resolution of how people are going to function in the public.”
Murphy adds, the annual summer reading program will be considerably different this year. At this time they’re not planning to have any in-person programs, but will instead have a few virtual events, and the reading logs can be filled out on paper or through a free phone app. Patrons of all ages can also take part in an ongoing “Adventure Quest” activity, which will allow them to enter for prizes at the conclusion of the program.
