In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Census is still happening. Statistics show Iowa is ahead of the curve around the nation, but public officials emphasize that it’s important to get everyone counted.

U.S. Census Bureau Director for Iowa Kelly Campbell says statewide the percentage of those who have completed their census forms is around 62%, ranking second in the country. In Dallas County specifically, Campbell says the 64% rate is commendable and highlights the cities of Adel and Dallas Center which are at 67%. He says the cities of Perry and Linden are both a bit behind, and urges residents to submit their forms sooner, rather than later. Campbell emphasizes that it’s estimated each person missed costs a city approximately $1,700 a year, which can make a big impact.

Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson echoes that importance, pointing out that state and federal funds are needed for projects like the asphalt overlay program and other critical infrastructure needs. Peterson adds, now is the perfect time to complete census forms given that many people are isolating at home due to coronavirus. “If you’re stuck at home right now and have a little bit of time on your hands, I would strongly encourage you to fill out your census. Whether you do it on the paper form that was sent to you, or online, or over the phone, it takes about ten minutes. Right now, if you’re feeling like you’re a little bit helpless and there’s nothing you can do to help, fill out your census. Because that’s one of the best ways you can help us out right now, is by continuing to pay attention to that program and get your census filled out.”

The Census Bureau is rolling out a social media campaign this weekend, and in the late summer and fall census workers will be going door-to-door to contact people who haven’t submitted their forms. For more information on the 2020 Census, click the link below to visit the official website.
