No school sponsored teams lost a track & field meet, golf meet, tennis or soccer match this spring. The COVID-19 Pandemic saw to that as school and everything school-related has been cancelled. However, individual athletes may have lost college opportunities, depending on how their seasons had gone.
One example is Greene County boys’ soccer 2019 first team All-State player Junior Gutierrez. He led all of Iowa in goals scored last season, but didn’t get the chance to play a single match in 2020. Another is track & field senior Colby Kafer, who finished second in the Class 2A State Track & Field Meet in 2019 in the long jump. There certainly could be others.
Greene County boys’ head track & field coach Chad Morton talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about opportunities lost for some seniors. “There could have been some possibilities had we had a season, and depending how that season would have gone.”
Todd Gordon, the Greene County Activities Director told Raccoon Valley Radio, “I feel bad for all the kids that were to have been in any spring activity, athletic or otherwise. Especially the seniors. And, I tell people it’s okay to feel bad, it’s natural.”
High School baseball and softball are suspended for now with a decision expected no later than June 1, perhaps sooner. Raccoon Valley Radio and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will keep you updated.
