COVID-19 has forced some operation changes for Guthrie County Extension and 4-H in preparing for summer fairs, but they are moving forward with hopes for a successful season for youth involved.

The state extended the deadline for 4-H members to identify their animals online from May 15th to June 1st. This includes breeding beef, swine, sheep, meat and dairy goats, dogs, horses, pets and dairy cattle. While the Guthrie County Extension office is closed to the public until further notice, Program Coordinator Krista Downing says 4-H members can still contact them to purchase ear tags or for other needs, “So anybody that’s planning on showing any swine, sheep, or goats can contact our office and we’ll get times put together for them. And then they just have to set up a time with us to pick them up at the office. So it’s a work around, it’s a challenge due to the coronavirus but we are working through it.”

Guthrie County Extension has cancelled or postponed in-person events through May 31st, which includes livestock weigh-ins, dog classes, and other workshops. Downing mentions there are some virtual learning opportunities available, and those interested can contact the office at 641-747-2276.
