As Iowa is about halfway through its spring turkey hunting seasons, a local Iowa Department of Natural Resources conservation officer is happy to share some tips on how to enjoy your harvest afterwards.
When Jeremy King is not on the job he enjoys spending time outdoors and hunting, and he usually has some go-to recipes for any season. One is turkey jerky, which King says is healthy, lean, has a long-shelf life, and he prefers with a mesquite seasoning, “The other one is what I refer to as “chicken fried turkey,” and what I do is I take the turkey breast and I cut it in strips about an inch-and-a-half wide, roll it in egg and then I go to the store and I get some dehydrated instant mashed potatoes. If you want to get fancy you could get the garlic or four cheeses, and I roll those turkey strips in that mashed potatoes, dehydrated, and then I fry them in butter on each side until it’s done and you eat them like chicken fingers and it’s absolutely fantastic.”
The third hunting season lasts from Wednesday through April 28th, and the final turkey season of 2020 is April 29 through May 17th. King reminds hunters that license and hunting requirements have not changed despite COVID-19. For more information, visit here.
