It was a busy night for the Perry Volunteer Fire Department, and many Perry residents likely woke up Sunday with the distinct smell of smoke in the air.

Firefighters responded to three separate fires throughout the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday. The first was a car fire reported just before 11 p.m. on eastbound Highway 141 near the Raccoon River Valley Trail crossing. The front section of the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived, and they were able to extinguish it within about 30 minutes. The second fire happened at around 1:15 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 2800 block of Warford Street. When firefighters arrived on scene, the blaze was mostly under control thanks to the efforts of a Perry Police Officer who used an extinguisher to keep it isolated to one unit.

The final fire of the night was reported just before 4 a.m. in the 1800 block of 8th Street. Much of the back side of the house was engulfed when emergency crews arrived. They were able to prevent it from spreading much further, but there was extensive damage to the house. The causes of the three overnight fires is unknown at this time, but no injuries were reported from any of the incidents. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
