Following Friday’s recommendations for Iowa’s schools to remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, all spring activities, including sports, from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association, are also cancelled. That means no track & field, soccer, golf, or tennis in the state’s schools.
Greene County Activities Director Todd Gordon gave his reaction to Raccoon Valley Radio Friday afternoon after hearing what Governor Reynolds said. “You kind of had a feeling that this might be what happens, but until you actually hear her say it, and it hits you, then it’s reality!”
Gordon continued, “As much as you prepare for things like that, it was a shock! It’s a punch to the gut. There’s really no other way to say it. I feel bad for our kids, first and foremost, our coaches, our parents, and our communities. We aren’t going to have this opportunity, but, of course, we have to do what’s right for us in the long run medically as we battle this virus.”
Along with the no school and no school-related activities announcement, came word that Iowa high school softball and baseball are suspended for now. Further word on the fate of those two summer sports is expected in May.
