A twitter campaign that’s designed to show solidarity during these unprecedented times has spread to Guthrie Center.
Last week the The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association starting the #LightUpIA movement where schools are encouraged to turn on the lights of their athletic stadiums for one minute for every day that students have missed of school.
AC/GC Activities Director Ethan Lensch says it’s a nice way to stay connected with the community , “Right now you’re just trying to find anything positive or anything that’s a good showing of strength. It’s kind of fun to see a lot of schools buy into it. Any way you can tell the families or kids that you’re thinking of them, because right now with all this disconnect you don’t really get that contact you wish you had. It’s an interesting thing and a neat little activity and we’re going to do it moving forward.”
Those in the community are also encouraged to take photos, from a distance, for social media using the hashtag #LightUpIA. Schools will turn on the lights at 8 p.m. every Friday until students are allowed to return to school.
