Greene County track & field senior Colby Kafer, like all Spring sports athletes is hoping he gets to compete. School, and the season, remains on hold due to COVID-19.

As a junior Kafer qualified for the 2019 Drake Relays, but fouled all three preliminary jumps. He overcame that misfortune to leap 22-6-1/2″ at the Class 2A State meet, coming within one jump of winning the event. Going from three fouls at the Relays to finish in second place at State is a meteoric rise not many have made.

That’s not all, his 22′ 6-1/2″ jump on his sixth and final attempt at state was the best long jump in the eight seasons competing as Greene County. It’s among the farthest of any Jefferson-based track & field attempt, and track & field here goes back nearly 100 years. Only a handful of Rams over the decades have jumper farther.

Kafer, also a standout running back on the football field (pictured above), and the rest of the Rams are expected to find out soon whether an abbreviated season will be held.
