If school resumes on May 1, then so will Spring sports in Iowa high schools. That’s the plan from the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. That’s likely to change if school does not resume on May 1, but Greene County HS boys’ head soccer coach Carl Behne remains optimistic about having some sort of season.
He said an abbreviated schedule is being worked on. He wants the boys, who should be highly ranked in Class 1A, if the season gets underway, to get matches, but also wants them to stay healthy. “Certainly, we don’t want to cram too much in too fast. We don’t want to get anybody injured. The boys have been working hard individually, keeping their fitness up, but it’s never the same when you’re by yourself, so we want to make sure everyone is safe as we ease into the season.”
The 2019 Rams qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament in Des Moines and eight starters return including senior Junior Gutierrez, a first team All-State selection, and the top scorer in all of Iowa high school boys’ soccer last season.
