As students continue to be at home while the Greene County School District is temporarily closed by Governor Kim Reynolds recommendation due to COVID-19 concerns, several educational opportunities have been put in place.

Some of those opportunities are through reading. District Reading Specialist Julie Neal says there are several ways students can access reading resources and individual teachers are also doing their part. She describes how some teachers are making connections with students using the internet.

“I know (second grade teacher) Lisa Wilkins has a YouTube site setup that she’s reading books to the students and asking them questions. (Sixth grade teacher) Whitney Hoyle is going to tape herself reading her read out loud book to her students. I guess she’s been getting a lot of emails from her students about missing and wanting to come back to school. So she wanted to make a connection with that.”

Neal points out, free books from the Ram Reading Program and other materials are included in the free grab-and-go lunches that are served to students. She explains one important aspect for parents and guardians to keep in mind while schools are closed.

“Just read to them, read with them, ask them questions about what they’re reading, (and) have them journal and write about what they’re reading. All of those are good skills just to keep going. We just want it to be a loving, enriching experience for them and not to be stressful.”
