Most people in the area have likely received and perhaps submitted their information for the 2020 Census, but as a reminder, Census Day is tomorrow.

Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson, who is part of the statewide Complete Count Commission, points out that April 1st isn’t the deadline, but is the day that the information should be current when filling out forms. Peterson mentions it takes 5-10 minutes to complete the questionnaire, and if people don’t fill out their information prior to the fall, it’s likely they’ll be visited at their home by a census worker.

He emphasizes that there’s no danger in filling out the forms or talking to the door-to-door workers, and the census is an important tool for the federal government to help individual communities. “Take the time, complete your census form. It’s easy to do, whether it’s on that paper form, online, or over the phone. There’s no reason not to do it; it only benefits our community, our county, and our state. The state receives all sorts of funds based on these numbers, too, so it’s very important. But it’s kind of just your every 10 years civic duty, just like voting, so be sure to fill that form out, complete that census, and help out your community.”

Peterson adds, there is no citizenship question on the census, and the results are so confidential that even the President of the United States couldn’t access specific individual data.
